What HRV actually measures

HRV measures the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats — not heart rate itself, but the millisecond-level fluctuations between each beat. These fluctuations are controlled by the autonomic nervous system: higher variation indicates a well-balanced system capable of responding flexibly to demand; lower variation indicates the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) system is dominant.

Counter-intuitively, more variation is better. A heart that beats with robotic regularity is under stress. A heart whose beat-to-beat intervals vary freely is recovering well.

Why it matters for health optimization

HRV is one of the few metrics that aggregates multiple health signals into a single daily number: sleep quality, training recovery, stress load, illness onset, alcohol impact, and nervous system resilience. Tracked over time, trends in HRV are more useful than any single reading.[1]

Reference ranges vary by lab, age, sex, medication status, and clinical context. Use these as discussion prompts with your clinician — not as diagnosis.


What good looks like

HRV is highly individual — population averages matter less than your personal baseline. That said, age-adjusted reference ranges are useful for orientation:

The most important comparison is you vs. your own baseline — not you vs. a population table. If your 7-day average drops 10%+ below your personal baseline, treat that as a signal regardless of absolute value.

When to test

Every morning, on waking, before getting up. The reading should be taken before checking your phone, standing up, or consuming caffeine. Most wearables automate this during sleep. If using a chest strap, do a 5-minute supine reading at consistent time.

Retest cadence: Continuous. Review 7-day rolling average weekly. Investigate sustained drops of 10%+ below your personal baseline.
